The World Data System Asia-Oceania Conference 2019 (WDS-AO 2019) was held at Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research (IGSNRR), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) on May 7-8. The conference was hosted by World Data System of International Science Council (ISC-WDS) and organized by IGSNRR, CAS. The honorary chairmen of the conference, Honglie Sun, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Jiulin Sun, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Shuzhi Wang, deputy director of the General Office of the CAS; Ruidan Wang, deputy director of the National Science and Technology Infrastructure Center of China; Representatives of ISC-WDS Asia-Oceania Regional Science Data Centers. Totally, more than 120 experts and scholars from 14 countries, including China, Japan, Australia, Russia, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Mongolia, Pakistan, India, Thailand, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bolivia and Sudan, participated the conference. The co-chairmen of the conference, Xiaohan Liao, deputy director of IGSNRR, CAS, and Prof. Takashi Watanabe, Kyoto University, Japan, moderated the opening ceremony.
On behalf of IGSNRR, CAS, Xiaohan Liao welcomed the guests, the representatives from the ISC-WDS Science Committee and all the experts and scholars attending the conference. On behalf of CAS, Shuzhi Wang delivered a welcome speech. He reviewed and introduced the development history of the science database of the CAS and the WDS Data Centers established relying on CAS. Ruidan Wang introduced the development history of the National Science and Technology Infrastructure Platform and the promulgation of the "Scientific Data Management Measures", and pointed out that it is expected to establish a closer cooperation relationship with the WDS Data Center in the future. Guoqing Li, a former member of the WDS Science Committee, professor of Aerospace Information Research Institute, CAS, introduced the background of the conference. Juanle Wang, the secretary-general of the conference, chairman of the local organizing committee, professor of IGSNRR, CAS, introduced the organization of the conference.
During the keynote speech phase, Sandy Harrison, chairman of the WDS Scientific Committee, made a keynote report on ‘World Data System –Trustworthy Data Services for Global Science’, introducing the establishment, goals, principles, scientific committee members, WDS members and future priorities of WDS. Lei Shi, National Science and Technology Infrastructure Center made a keynote report on ‘Enhancing Scientific Data Management in China’, introducing the overall situation of scientific data development in China, problems in current scientific data management in China, and relevant provisions of ‘Measures for Scientific Data Management’, etc.
With the agenda of the conference, six sessions were organized in two days. These themes are international collaboration on data, data for geophysics and space science, development of data-sharing system, marine and polar data, data processing and evaluation, and WDS forum. A total of 33 oral reports and 12 posters were displayed in the conference. This conference significantly promoted the exchange and cooperation of the WDS Asia-Pacific data centers, and further enhanced the influence of Chinese science data centers in the international community. After the WDS-AO 2019 conference, the WDS Scientific Committee held a two-day work meeting at IGSNRR,CAS.
